We’re big fans of Indian food. It’s one of our go-to cuisines if dining out. And we make a ton of Indian-inspired curries for dinner.
Usually we pair our homemade dishes with brown rice. But sometimes (often) we crave the warm bread you’d get from a restaurant. So we set out to figure out how to make it on our own, settling on chapati.
Chapati is an unleavened bread made with whole wheat flour, making is easier to make, and a more nutritious, than naan. The dough requires just 30 minutes of rest before you can get rolling. After that, it cooks up in minutes.
These are best enjoyed right from the pan. But you can also freeze them to reheat at a later date. We’d recommend doubling the recipe if that interests you. Feel free to add garlic or play around with the seasonings, and pair with your favorite curry.

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup warm, warm water (roughly 110 degrees)
- 3 Tbsp. safflower oil, plus more to cook
Directions
- Step 1
- Whisk flours and salt together. Add water and oil, and stir until dough forms. Form dough into a ball and place on a lightly floured surface. Kneed for 60 seconds.
- Step 2
- Divide dough into 4 pieces. Press each piece tight to form a smooth ball. Transfer to a plate, and cover with a kitchen towel. Let rest for 30 min.
- Step 3
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one ball into a 9-inch round. Place on a sheet of parchment paper, and cover with another sheet of parchment paper. Repeat with the remaining 3 dough balls, layering rounds between parchment paper.
- Step 4
- Heat 12-inch cast iron skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Drizzle with safflower oil, using a spatula to lightly coat the pan. When the oil just begins to smoke, carefully place one dough round onto the pan. Cook for 2 min., or until dough is bubbly. Flip and cook for another 2 min., or until each side begins to brown. Transfer to a plate, and repeat with remaining rounds, coating the pan with oil after each chapati is cooked. Serve with your favorite curry.
